but the unusual and clever action of one service memberproved to beat all odds. the invasion forces were an all-star team including first andsecond ranger battalions, the 82nd airborne, recon marines, delta force, and navy seals. but despite theirstrength, the u.s. forces faced all kinds of issuesrelated to planning, intelligence, and communications.
the story is that while communist forces pinned down the entire island, communications were so bad that the units could not call for support anywhere. one member, in a snafu that became legend decided to pull out his credit card and make a long distancecall on a payphone. different reports identifyingthe infamous caller have claimed it was either a navy seal,
a u.s. army paratrooper,or an army officer. whoever it was, they wereable to use that payphone to reach fort braggand request air support from an ac-130, whichallowed a team of navy seals to stay in position until relieved by a force of recon marines the next day. despite the setbacks inoperation urgent fury, the story has a happy ending. the grenadian people see theu.s. invasion as a good thing.
