road in brandon. rod carter is live there for us tonight. rod, this guy didn't have to go far to use those stolen cards. reporter: not at all. i tried to talk to the folks here at l.a. fitness.
they did not want to talk about what happened here, but this is a stark reminder for all of us. we have to be very vigilent about securing our property no matter where we are. basically i just carry my gym bag. reporter: jesse oates works
out at l.a. fitness six times a week. he is very serious about his health. monday and saturday. god rested on sunday. so do i. reporter: oates is serious about his safety, too, and
making sure while he's lifting what's no one is lifting his belongings. that's what sheriff's deputies say this man did recently at the brand l.a. fitness, stealing someone's credit cards while they were working out and made his way
across the street to brandon mall and went on a shopping spree at the apple store using one of those cards to buy 5 grand worth of stuff, two laptops and an iphone 7. for this to happen it had to be somebody who either watched or, you know, who knows?
maybe they just studied the traffic of the staff. reporter: but at what point do apple clerks or other retailers get suspicious and then start questioning the card? i reached out to apple to find out about that.
they never called me back. it's always somebody in every part of the gym. reporter: as for jesse he's confident this is isolated, but he will not let down his guard. while he gets ripped, he wants to make sure he doesn't get ripped off.
the main thing is bring a lock. if you have your own personal lock, make sure you have that lock with you and, you know, just keep an eye on things. reporter: it almost seems like we give these tips a lot, but this certainly proves that
it bears repeating. make sure you write cid on the back of your card. that will sort of force the clerk to have to ask for an identification from whoever is using that card. also make sure you never leave your cards unattended whether
at work or the gym. always know where they are and don't leave them in your car either because if something happens to your car, that car goes away, the cards go away with it, just simple tips to keep in mind to help cut down
